Third Space Learning’s calculation policy shows how we at Third Space Learning approach teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in our one to one online tutoring and resources. We focus on developing understanding of the four operations progressively, using a range concrete, pictorial and abstract methods.
Our maths experts have spent years developing a clear approach to teaching the four operations that builds upon strong foundational knowledge.
The document provides suggestions of different concrete resources, pictorial representations or abstract methods that you could use when teaching each concept. For example, number pairs to 100 can be taught using tens frames and place value counters, base 10 drawings, hundred squares, base 10, bead strings or a Rekenrek.
This calculation policy can be used in throughout your school to develop a consistent and progressive approach to teaching the four operations. To extend this, the calculation policy can be sent home to help parents use the correct terminology and methods when supporting their child at home.
Teachers often tell us they want to implement a progressive approach to teaching the four operations; save time writing a calculation policy by using this school leader guide.
