This document contains a list of appropriate sentence stems and vocabulary for measure (mass, capacity, length, time, money, perimeter, area, volume and converting units) for Years 1 to 6. Sentence stems are used as a way for pupils to communicate and clarify mathematical conceptual ideas or generalisations. Using a common language both across a topic and the primary phase avoids confusion and encourages the use of accurate mathematical vocabulary.
The document is organised by year group when new mathematical concepts are introduced. When appropriate, sentence stems or vocabulary can be used from previous year groups to consolidate learning.
